Saints Anne and Joachim....
As the grandparents of Jesus, Saints Anne and Joachim are also considered the patron saints of grandparents. According to these noncanonical sources, Anne (Hebrew: Ḥannah) was born in Bethlehem in Judaea. She married Joachim, and, although they shared a wealthy and devout life at Nazareth, they eventually lamented their childlessness. The couple rejoiced at the birth of their daughter, whom Anne named Mary. When the child was three years old, Joachim and Anne, in fulfillment of her divine promise, brought Mary to the Temple of Jerusalem, where they left her to be brought up..Saint Anne is patroness of unmarried women, housewives, women in labor or who want to be pregnant, grandmothers, and educators. She is also a patroness of horseback riders, cabinet-makers and miners.
Part of the reason why Saint Anne is so famous is because she produced a child born of Immaculate Conception. Saint Anne read the scriptures to Mary when she was a very small child. Saint Anne had promised that she would give her child to the service of God, and she kept her holy vow.
The Catholic Church assigns each canonised Saint a “feast day” to especially remember them. The Feast Day of St Anne Western Feast- July 26th.
During my childhood and youth days, St Anne novena were beginning nine days before this feast, I used to run early morning to Milagris Church, Sawantwadi and devoutly sing in the Choir with Uncle John Dsilva and Late Casmir uncle and group.....
Intro- Hem Bhagevonti Ana....sorgimchem Raj choloitai...
Bodveanchea sangata, vinoti kor amche pasot...
Sant Ana Mozot kori ama pordexank....(10 times)
Concluding with the favourite hymn- Sant An tuje sufoll jinnem...
And on the Feast day, which would normally be chosen a Sunday... It used to be a Fabulous celebration for both, children and their parents....Children bringing their greeting cards and paintings for presentation in the Cathecism class and then waiting for a gift!!! And then a big rush to the Milagris School Hall for a series of dances and songs and delightful performances by the Cathecism classwise students, the main attraction which everybody loved to watch was the enthusiastic skit by Milagris Boarders......
The Milagris Youth(specially Maxy Borges from Bhatwadi) busy counting the number of parents and the available SAMOSAS......and then inspite of heavy rains, he would rush to Natekar Bhajia Stall or at Hotel Tara to grab some more Samosas....
Those were the days my friends......
There was so much of love and care and honor and respect for Parents as well as Grandparents......
It is said- “When grandparents enter the door, discipline flies out the window.” “There are fathers who do not love their children; there is no grandfather who does not adore his grandson.”
“Sometimes our grandmas and grandpas are like grand-angels.”
Thinking of my deceased grandparents Late Salvador and Josephine and Bautis Fernandes and my dear Dad Louis....Rest in Peace and keep watching us from heaven above.....
Loads of wishes and love to my loving and caring Mai Paskin......
Wishing you Good health and happiness and a lovely smile may always be on your face....
Warmest wishes and hugs to my 92 year old sweet Mamai Mrs. Rita (Mother of my Mom)
Thank you for your infinite love and wisdom...
Thank you for building a family of love and kindness..
To my mentors and best friends, Happy Grandparents Day.

Hello Monica. I seem to have missed this recognition and celebration of st Anne and Granparents Day. Thank you for the stories and the song. Just so beautiful. Lovely to see the photos of Mai and Rita. I felt a little homesick for my Indian Family. Listening to your song brought back so many memories if time spent with you all. I am looking forward to seeing you all again one day. Until then Take Care. Love Jenny
