Mary had good, faithful parents who raised her with a love and devotion to God like none other except Jesus Christ Himself. Joachim and Anne serve as role models for parents and both deserve to be honored and emulated for their devotion to God and Our Lady Mary, the Mother of God.
We honor Mary’s parents as saints. We celebrate with joy their joint feast today. Their love for one another and for Mary is an example to us of how God calls us to live. They also remind us to honor our own grandparents and to thank them for the blessings they have passed down to us in love.
The day is to remind us in Pope Francis’ words that “old age is a gift and that grandparents are the link between the different generations and are able to pass on to the young the experience of life.”
